Ich bin Fotograf aus Leidenschaft.
Eine Kamera ist für mich nicht mehr und nicht weniger als ein Werkzeug in den Händen des Fotografen. Ein bestimmtes Objektiv oder ein Kamerabody sagt etwas über den Anspruch des Fotografen an sein Werkzeug aus – nicht aber über das Endprodukt: das Bild.

Ich bin überzeugt: Ein guter Fotograf kann mit jeder Kamera ein gut gestaltetes Bild schaffen, während ein schlechter Fotograf dies selbst mit der teuersten Ausrüstung nicht vermag. Kommt zum Blick für den Bildaufbau noch ein sicher beherrschtes Equipment hinzu, entsteht ein Unterschied in der Qualität des Bildes.

Menschen, die nicht fotogen sind, gibt es nach meiner Erfahrung nicht. Entscheidend ist das Zusammenspiel von Vertrauen, Können und Erfahrung. Ich fotografiere oft Menschen mit einem oder mehreren Handicaps – und bin immer wieder erstaunt über die Schönheit, die in ihnen sichtbar wird. Diese Schönheit ans Licht zu bringen, sehe ich als meine Aufgabe.

Als Fotograf und Künstler ist es mein Los, dass ich 99 % meiner Arbeiten niemals öffentlich zeigen darf, da sie der medizinischen Schweigepflicht unterliegen. Nur Ärzte und Ratsuchende sehen diese Bilder. Doch das hindert mich nicht – im Gegenteil: Es spornt mich an, aus jedem Patienten das Schönste seiner selbst in einem Bild hervorzubringen.

Darin sehe ich meinen fotografischen Auftrag an unsere Gesellschaft.

I am a passionate photographer.
To me, a camera is no more and no less than a tool in the photographer’s hands. A certain lens or camera body may reflect the photographer’s expectations of his tools, but not the final outcome: the picture.

I believe that a good photographer can create a well-designed image with any camera, while a poor photographer will fail to do so, even with the most expensive equipment. When a good eye for composition is combined with well-mastered tools, this makes all the difference in the quality of the picture.

In my experience, there is no such thing as a person who is not photogenic. It is always a matter of trust, skill, and experience. I often take portraits of people with one or more handicaps and I am constantly amazed by the beauty that lies within them. My task is to make this beauty visible.

As a photographer and artist, it is my lot that 99 % of my works can never be displayed publicly, as they are subject to medical confidentiality. Only doctors and the patients themselves may see these images. Yet this does not limit me – on the contrary, it motivates me to bring out the very best in every person I photograph.

This is how I understand my photographic contribution to society.

Ninaamini kwamba mpiga picha stadi anaweza kuunda picha nzuri kwa kutumia kamera yoyote. Mpiga picha asiye na ujuzi hata akiwa na vifaa vya thamani hawezi kufanikisha hilo. Jicho zuri la mtazamo likikutana na vifaa vinavyotumiwa kwa ustadi, basi ndipo tofauti ya ubora inaonekana.

Kwangu hakuna mtu asiye na uso wa kupendeza mbele ya kamera. Daima ni mchanganyiko wa imani, ufundi na uzoefu. Mara nyingi ninapiga picha za watu wenye ulemavu mmoja au zaidi – na mara zote hunishangaza kwa uzuri ulio ndani yao. Kazi yangu ni kufanya uzuri huo uonekane.

Bahatimbaya kwangu, kama mpiga picha na msanii, ni kwamba asilimia 99 ya kazi zangu siwezi kuonyesha hadharani, kwa sababu zipo chini ya siri ya kitabibu. Ni madaktari na wagonjwa wenyewe tu wanaoweza kuziangalia. Lakini hili halinizuii – kinyume chake, hunichochea zaidi kumtoa kila mtu niliyepiga picha katika uzuri wake wa kipekee.

Hivyo ndivyo ninavyotazama wajibu wangu wa kifotografia kwa jamii.
